Clashes Intensify Between Assad Supporters and Interim Government

Published: 2025-03-09 | Translated from: news.mn

Fierce clashes have erupted between Syria's interim government and supporters of exiled President Bashar al-Assad, resulting in over 550 casualties. Fighting broke out in Latakia, in the northwest of Syria, and has continued since. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports that the clashes are intensifying near streets and hospitals. Many of the victims are from the minority Muslim community, including children and women, who were supporters of the Assad regime. The interim government has surrounded the city of Latakia to contain the conflict and has lost over 200 soldiers. According to the state-owned news agency, the Ministry of Defense has ordered all roads leading to Latakia to be closed until peace is restored. In the past three months, Syria's interim government has called for unity among minority groups and citizens in the region, making efforts to strengthen the nation. However, fighting between Kurdish forces and other groups in northern Syria continues, leaving the country's stability uncertain. SOURCE: NHK

After the Lunar New Year holiday concluded, the Bank of Mongolia increased the monetary policy rate from 10% to 12%. "NEWS" agency is summarizing the highlight events of this week. 11 Citizens Died in Traffic Accidents During the Holidays The Ulaanbaatar Police Department provided information regarding the accidents, injuries, and complaints reported during the Lunar New Year. During the holiday period, a total of 10,573 calls and reports were registered by the police organization. During the holiday period, 1 citizen died in the capital, and 10 citizens lost their lives on the rural roads due to traffic accidents. In addition, 41 people were injured in traffic accidents. The main causes of traffic accidents were due to not following the traffic rules. The police organization operated with the help of citizens and the public during these days. There is significant movement directed from the countryside to the city. Drivers are reminded to adjust their speed and adhere to traffic rules when traveling on rural roads, and to be responsible. Minister N. Uchral: Will Prohibit Games Other Than Sports Betting Cabinet ministers provided information about the issues discussed and decided at the government meeting. Head of the Cabinet Secretariat of the Government, N. Uchral, stated: "During today's government meeting, amendments to the Permission Law were approved, allowing sports betting while prohibiting all other betting and online gambling through an urgent procedure to be resolved by the State Great Khural." According to the National Statistics Office's 2023 data, 200 economic crimes were recorded, with damages amounting to 417.2 billion Tögrög resulting from economic crimes in 2024. By age group, 9.2% were aged between 18-29 and 47.7% were aged 30-39. Financial investigation operations revealed that 1.7 trillion Tögrög, or 500 million USD, was transferred abroad from Mongolia. Contracts for 6,000-77,000 USD were made, and only digital gambling operations were conducted, with 1 xbet transferring 976,000 USD to our country for advertising purposes. Although less than 1 million USD is brought in from abroad, 500 million USD is flowing out, according to calculations. Although the Communications Regulatory Committee restricted access from Mongolia to 6,036 domain addresses that operate online gambling activities, links were changed, and VPNs were used to continue these operations. Monopoly agencies imposed restrictions on these businesses due to actions deemed violative by the current law, resulting in fines of 13,500,000 Tögrög under the Violation Law. Policy Rate Increased by 2 Percentage Points to Reach 12% The president of the Bank of Mongolia, B. Lkhagvasuren, provided information regarding the decision from the Monetary Policy Committee's regular meeting for the first quarter of 2025. He stated, "The Bank of Mongolia’s Monetary Policy Committee met on March 6 and 7, deciding to increase the policy rate by 2 percentage points to reach 12%, to revise the upper limit of the debt-to-income ratio for consumer loans to 50%, and to regulate pension loans. The following factors influenced this decision. The policy being implemented by the USA is expected to negatively affect the prices of raw materials in the international market. The decline of China's real estate sector continues, and weak demand for steel is seen as a reason for falling coal and iron ore prices. Inflation has increased in recent months, reaching 9.6% nationwide and 9.7% in Ulaanbaatar City in January 2025. The main influencer was the rise in electricity prices and its indirect effects, along with increases in household wages and income, leading to significant increases in services, rental, and imported goods prices. Public transportation prices increased in February, and considering price pressures resulting from demand and cost, the Bank of Mongolia revised its inflation forecast upwards. As a result, inflation is expected to exceed the central bank's target throughout this year and stabilize within the targeted interval starting in the second quarter of the following year. Although cost-push inflation has outstripped the central bank's target, to reduce risks such as acceleration of price growth through expectations and the increase of second-order effects, necessary policy adjustments had to be made," he said. CPPCC Resolved 99% of Total Proposals in a Year The National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political advisory body, opened its annual regular session in Beijing on March 4, 2025. President Xi Jinping, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and other leaders attended the opening session of the Communist Party of China's 14th National Committee's third plenary session, which started at 3 PM. The issues that were to be discussed were sequentially discussed and approved by the plenary session, with Wang Huning, chairman of the National Committee of the Communist Party of China, representing the CPPCC's Standing Committee and presenting the work report. Specifically, initiatives such as supporting policy measures for economic cooperation with developed countries with underdeveloped countries, cross-border information flow, and free trade zones were undertaken over the past year. In the opening speech of Wang at the plenary session, it was stated that since the 2024 session, "CPPCC" received a total of 6,019 proposals, of which 5,091 were resolved, achieving a resolution rate of 99.9%. The consultative committee organized training and seminars contributing to public education and development, improving the business environment with private sector support, and establishing a free trade testing environment. In summary, the national upper-level political committee helped China's policymakers in forming policies to promote high-level openness, Wang emphasized.

Purchase Goods and Services up to One Billion Tugriks from the 'E-store'

Published: 2025-03-09 | Translated from: gogo.mn

During the meeting, the new draft law on the procurement of goods, works, and services with state and local government property, along with other accompanying legislation, was introduced. Additionally, a draft regulation on providing subsidies for gas fuel prices to households in areas designated for improving air quality in Ulaanbaatar was presented. The Director of the State Procurement Agency, Battsul Ts., presented the revised draft law on procurement using state and local government assets. Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor of the City, T. Davaadalai, introduced proposals for amendments to related laws. There are currently shortcomings in the legal framework for implementing major projects and activities, beginning with tender selection. It was emphasized that amendments to 22 provisions of eight laws are needed in the first phase. Moreover, revised versions of the law on procurement using state and local assets and the law on land are necessary. The definition of "design" is interpreted differently in the Law on Construction, the Law on Railway Transport, and the Law on Energy. For instance, the revised draft of the law on procurement using state and local assets aims to streamline the selection process for agreements on mega-projects and reduce contract costs and time, thereby enhancing procurement efficiency. The procurement of goods, works, and services up to one billion tugriks can be executed through the "E-store," incorporating several regulatory measures to reduce human involvement and integrate artificial intelligence. Moreover, discrepancies in the definition of "design" exist in various laws, such as the Construction Law, Railway Transport Law, and Energy Law. The Budget Law refers to it as "design estimation," which lacks inter-sectoral coherence. Therefore, it is necessary to amend clause 4.1.30 of the Construction Law and clarify the feasibility studies as preliminary and detailed. The Prime Minister stated, "The Ministry of Finance, the capital city, and relevant organizations have unified their principles. Now, it is necessary to incorporate the proposals of political parties and have the Ulaanbaatar Chamber of Commerce facilitate discussions with private sector representatives. However, it is imperative to introduce major projects of significant economic importance to the parliament and make them transparent." A working group led by Cabinet Secretariat Head N. Uchral will be established to have the revised draft law on procurement using state and local assets approved by the Parliament.

A Czech Scientist Who Traveled 13,000 km Across Mongolia by Car, Boat, and Plane

Published: 2025-03-09 | Translated from: montsame.mn

Pavel Poucha was a renowned scientist who translated "The Secret History of the Mongols" into Czech just five years after diplomatic relations were established with Czechoslovakia in 1955. He came to Mongolia to explore the life, history, culture, and customs of the Mongolian people, as well as the social conditions and developments of the time, and wrote a book titled "13,000 km Across Mongolia - by Car, Boat, and Plane," which was published in 1957. He traveled through the western provinces as far as Bayan-Ölgii, and his main guide during the journey was academician B. Rinchen. Both famous scientists were born in 1905 and were contemporaries. Academician B. Rinchen helped him during the journey by showing him rock carvings, burial mounds, and the ruins of ancient settlements, assisting with documenting and measuring them. This venture has been credited with bringing Mongolia’s rich cultural heritage to the attention of European science and contributing to the advancement of Mongolian studies in participating countries. Despite the journey taking place in the winter, with harsh and cold weather conditions, they covered a great distance in a "69" vehicle. Local people gifted him a hat when traveling from Uvs province to Bayan-Ölgii province, according to senior diplomat and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary O. Enkhtur, in his interview with our agency. Furthermore, Poucha detailed in his book the state of Mongolian factories and industries, the types of goods coming in and out of Khatgal, and the livestock numbers in visited provinces, as well as giving a detailed account of life in Ulaanbaatar in 1955, offering a comprehensive snapshot of Mongolian life at that time. He documented everything he saw and experienced extensively.

Notably, a snowmelt flood has occurred on the road from Mörön to Bulgan, specifically 16 kilometers from Ikh-Uul soum and 15 kilometers from Tarialan. Therefore, officials have warned travelers on this route to adjust their speed accordingly while participating in traffic. In spring, accumulated and frozen snow and ice melt, leading to snowmelt floods. Flash floods and snowmelt floods carry the risk of causing significant damage, and the National Emergency Management Agency has warned against building houses, fences, sheds, or other structures in flood-prone areas such as water paths, riverbanks, ditches, dry stream beds, floodplains, and sandbars. They have also advised moving away from flood-prone areas and ensuring that young children do not play unsupervised near rivers, streams, lakes, or ponds. According to information from the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring, more than 50% of the country is currently covered with snow. Specifically, Altai, Khangai, Khentii, and Khuvsgul mountainous regions and the Tamsag basin have snow covering over 20 centimeters thick. In Uvs' Naranbulag, Zavkhan's Bayankhairkhan, Tsetsen-Uul, Tsaaganchuluut, Otgon, Bayankhongor's Gurvanbulag, Bayanbulag, and Selenga's Yeruu, snow depth ranges from 22-30 centimeters, while in other regions the snow is between 1-10 centimeters thick, reaching up to 50 centimeters in some ditches and drifts. Additionally, a "black crack" has opened on the ice road from Khatgal village in Khuvsgul province to Chandman-Öndör. Specifically, 400 meters from the shore of Lake Khuvsgul at the Donskhikh beach, a black crack has appeared, as reported by the 69th unit of the Fire Fighting and Rescue Service. As a result, the authorities have cautioned against crossing the ice of the lake to shorten travel time or conduct vehicle transport. A "black crack" refers to a phenomenon where cracked ice parts on both sides and water surfaces in between. In contrast, a "white crack" describes a situation where ice cracks and heaps up from collisions.

NPC Radiation Center aims to perform simultaneous liver and kidney transplants

Published: 2025-03-09 | Translated from: unuudur.mn

The specialists at the National Cancer Center (NPC) are working on localizing the practice of performing simultaneous liver and kidney transplants from living donors and donors with brain death. In line with this, a memorandum of cooperation has been signed with the National Transplant Center (NTC). As a result, the parties aim to introduce simultaneous liver and kidney transplants for patients with liver cancer, enhance mutual learning in terms of profession and methodology, and strengthen their capabilities. Chronic underlying diseases are a major issue in improving the outcomes of cancer surgeries and ensuring the quality of life for patients post-operation. Chronic kidney failure accounts for 55% of urinary and reproductive system disorders that are prevalent among the population. In other words, patients in the terminal stage of liver-kidney syndrome due to severe liver diseases face complications such as needing to travel between hospitals and being under the supervision of multiple doctors due to kidney failure, even after liver transplantation. This reduces the effectiveness of surgery and increases the risk of post-operative complications, as noted by the doctors at NPC. Therefore, it is common for citizens to travel to South Korea and India to undergo simultaneous liver and kidney transplant surgeries. Given this situation, the NPC aims to perform these surgeries based on their current equipment and human resource capabilities. Notably, since 2018, the NPC has become the second hospital in Mongolia to perform organ transplants by carrying out liver transplants from living donors for patients with liver cancer. So far, 181 liver transplants have been performed. Meanwhile, the NTC successfully performed its first kidney transplant in 2006. To date, this hospital has conducted over 700 liver and kidney transplants. However, nationwide, there are waiting lists with 350 recorded individuals needing kidney transplants and over 250 requiring liver transplants, with these numbers expected to grow in the future.

DeMarcus Cousins to Play in Mongolian Basketball League Amid Betting Concerns

Published: 2025-03-09 | Translated from: isee.mn

DeMarcus Cousins, an NBA player recently arrived in Mongolia, is set to participate in a match tomorrow, which might see bets placed through 1xbet, potentially organized by the Basketball Association. "Selenge Bodons," a team that finished in fifth place with 15 wins in the National Super League, has added NBA player DeMarcus Cousins to its lineup, with Cousins arriving in the country on Friday. This makes DeMarcus Cousins the most famous athlete to play in the Mongolian top league. In a statement to the press, DeMarcus Cousins said, "I was thrilled to accept the offer from the Mongolian team and join the 'Selenge Bodons.' My main goal is, of course, to play basketball. I also aim to help the 'Selenge Bodons' become champions. Additionally, I look forward to learning about Mongolian culture and traditions, and I intend to use my free time productively. I've watched videos of the Mongolian league. I followed the 'Selenge Bodons' on social media to get information about the league. My goal is to contribute to the team's success. I plan to add value to the team through my leadership and achievements." Cousins will play his first game in Mongolia tomorrow against the "Knights." Meanwhile, sources report that people have placed bets on Cousins' game against the "Knights," allegedly organized in collaboration with 1xbet. According to sources, "The Basketball Association of Mongolia might be involved in these activities. There are reports that the association uses 1xbet to attract substantial betting money and conducts activities that directly influence the game's outcome. In particular, money is drawn through 1xbet, and there might be collusion to win or lose based on which team has attracted more betting money," the source said. "The Basketball Association of Mongolia is reportedly cooperating with a company called Genius, which sells betting statistics data," the sources added. In other news, regarding the restriction of online gambling, Cabinet Secretariat Chief N. Uchral is drafting a proposal to amend the Criminal Code, the Law on Violations, and the Banking Law. He announced an urgent proposal for the spring session. The legislative proposal toughens penalties for organizing online gambling, including 5-8 years of imprisonment and fines ranging from 10 to 100 million. Major Champions Team Spirit Defeat The MongolZ Once Again

Published: 2025-03-09 | Translated from: gogo.mn

When the two teams met in the previous season of the ESL Pro League, the Russian team won 2-1, but this time they won 2-0. The 21st season of the most prestigious league tournament, ESL Pro League, continues in Stockholm, Sweden. The Mongolian team "The MongolZ," which was directly invited to the second stage of the tournament with a prize pool of $400,000 (1.3 billion MNT), played their third match today against major champions Team Spirit and lost 0-2 (Anubis 6-13, Dust II 11-13). In the match, the Russian team's player Danil "donk" Krishkovets led his team with 110.6 ADR (Average Damage per Round) and +19 frags. Thus, the Russian Spirit qualified for the playoffs, while The MongolZ, with a 2-1 record, will play tomorrow at 17:30 to qualify for the playoffs. (The schedule and opponent for the next match are not yet determined.) The MongolZ held G2 to 2-11 and continue to lead the ESL Pro League. The MongolZ won their first match in the ESL Pro League 2-0. "The MongolZ" team joined the roster of the national team of Mongolia. The last time the two teams met was in the "ESL Pro League Season 20" tournament, where Spirit won 2-1. Two weeks ago, the Mongolian youth were eliminated from the quarterfinals of the "PGL Cluj-Napoca 2025" tournament, and in the previous ESL Pro League Season 20 tournament playoffs, they lost to Turkey's "Eternal Fire" and finished 9-12th place. The League: Forget the Season, Everything Starts Anew in the Playoffs

Published: 2025-03-09 | Translated from: news.mn

The playoffs of the 2024-2025 season for the Mongolian Basketball Premier League begin today. The top eight teams of the league, based on their performance throughout the season, are now embarking on their journey to the championship. It’s important to forget the success of the season and remember that everything starts fresh at 0-0. KHAS KHULEGS VS. DARKHAN UNITED One of the teams that have undoubtedly improved this season is Darkhan United. A team that was deciding whether to stay in the premier league just a year ago has now become one of the league's tough nuts, standing like an unwavering soldier. Meanwhile, Khas Khulegs, as expected, led the season with their performance, sufficiently proving themselves as the defending champions. Integrating Tolbert has paid off, with him fitting remarkably well into the team. Undoubtedly, he is expected to earn this season’s best foreign player award. Darkhan United has prepared for the playoffs by bringing in a significant player, Nick Banyard, to counter the paint aggression of Tolbert and the Khulegs. In his league debut, he flashed with 21 points and 10 rebounds. But how will he perform against the champions? The Khulegs have been playing without their full roster since the season began, owing to frequent injuries among veteran players like the newly minted Honored Athlete B. Bilguun, D. Munkhtuvshin, and O. Sergelen, who have been taking turns missing games and have long searched for a partner for Tolbert. They eventually brought in a young talent, Ian Miller. Thus, it seems that the Khulegs will be starting the playoffs with a full team. Of course, the young players of Darkhan United started the season quite well. In each game, against each team, they showed their capability in giving and taking and in progressing to the next level. There’s no doubt they have homework prepared for the champions. BISHREL METALS VS. ZAVKHAN BROTHERS Can the Brothers, who replaced Stone with Orly, stop Metals? Many were surprised when they suddenly let Stone go without renewing his contract. Instead, they brought in Cleanthony Early, a former NBA player who played for Swoosh. Looking at his personal skills, influence on the team, and scoring sense, Orly is a well-rounded player. However, his temper and on-court behavior caused trouble for Swoosh years ago. Mackenzie Moore is skilled and capable enough to provide Orly with the ball and back him up. On the other hand, it seems the Brothers lack strength in the central position. Metals have many players, starting with Devon Scott, who enjoy playing inside the paint, focusing on mid-range shots. It is intriguing how the Brothers will secure the defensive rebounds rather than attack them. Given that there’s a Korean coach, they will surely try to solve issues with zone defense. Contrarily, can Metals make accurate long-range shots during this period? A fascinating series to showcase the coaches’ moves and decisions awaits us. IHC APES VS. ERDENE MINERS This series is a highlight of the first round. The Miners, who clawed their way from the bottom to the playoffs, have nothing to lose. Winning or losing, it wouldn’t make sense to call their efforts a failure. At the start of the season, they lost everything, their situation dimmed, but the return of G. Bolor-Erdene was their salvation. The native son of Erdene has reunited with his local team, showing that he should be a starting guard for the national team and compete for “Most Valuable Player” of the league. The duo of Ponds and Espo is also commendably performing. Moreover, they have a wide range of starters and substitutes filled with experience and energy. Coach E. Anar seems to be mastering his craft. Regarding Apes, they started their season unsteadily, only to bring back almost everything by the end. The change from last year is in the two foreign players and the form of M. Ulzii-Orshikh. They are like a double-edged sword, capable of beating any team or being beaten by any team. However, the playoffs won’t accept this kind of demeanor. The rule here is to win or go home. No mistake can be repeated here. Looking at Apes’ play and roster, they seem to be missing just one thing to become champions. That is the form of the team captain and league “MVP” M. Ulzii-Orshikh. As a shooter, defender, scorer, paint protector, and crowd-drawing figure, they lack nothing compared to other teams. Basketball enthusiasts know well that if M. Ulzii-Orshikh of the season shows up for the playoffs, G. Bolor-Erdene will be "lunch." Therefore, the last season’s “MVP” is eagerly awaited by his teammates and fans. This series will be fully decided by the duel of M. Ulzii-Orshikh vs. G. Bolor-Erdene. BCH KNIGHTS VS. SELENGE BOARS This series is perhaps the most intriguing and anticipated of the first round. Can the championship trophy be bought with money, or will it be demonstrated that it requires championship culture and the path one must go through? On the other hand, it will be Boogie Cousins' debut and a farewell dinner for B. Munkhbold and O. Uuganbayar. There’s no need to elaborate much on this series. There’s just one question: How will the Knights limit Cousins?

The Only Mongolian Writer Creating in a Foreign Language

Published: 2025-03-09 | Translated from: unuudur.mn

I visited Chinagiin Galsan, who recently received the title of Labor Hero and is one of the few writers to achieve this great honor, at his home a few days ago. He is my teacher. When I was a student at the National University of Mongolia, he taught us German. When I was working without a stable place of my own, he met me on the streets of Ulaanbaatar and told me there was a possibility to get a place to live if I could quickly find some money. Fortunately, I was able to find the necessary amount and secured a home for me, my wife, and my son. Teachers often provide for their students, and in this way, Galsan helped me build a home. My teacher writes mostly in a foreign (German) language. Out of over 50 of his books, 42 have been written in German. The novel "Listen to the Blue Sky" has been translated into 16 languages, with Mongolian being the sixteenth. His first book of poems published in Mongolian was "Er Har Sur." My teacher is Tuvan. He did not hide this fact, although perhaps he should have. He first applied to become an official member of the Writers' Union in 1968, and it took him 20 years to become a member. He received the title of Cultural Meritorious Worker in 2006 during President N. Enkhbayar's administration. President Enkhbayar noted that Galsan was often overlooked for awards and personally issued the award to him. Enkhbayar, who had a great affinity for literature, realized that Galsan was deserving of recognition. While in Germany, Galsan helped various religious organizations bring 80 tons of food, warm clothes, and medicine to Mongolia during difficult times in 1992, when store shelves were nearly empty. The German organizations quickly agreed to aid, invited him, and allowed him to choose what was necessary from their warehouses. Though mainly overlooked by Mongolian authorities, Galsan has received about 20 awards from foreign countries, including the Federal Cross of Honor from Germany and the ALUA award from Denmark, which is given every five years to the best work by Asian, African, and Oceanian writers. Galsan's cousin Tse-Tseg, a legendary milkmaid who milked 1125 liters of milk from a single yak cow a year, was repeatedly nominated for the title of Hero of Labor but was never awarded the title. Despite facing many obstacles due to his Tuvan origin, Galsan finally received the title of Hero of Labor under President Khurelsukh after being nominated a third time. In 1977, when Y. Tsedenbal was visiting East Germany, Galsan, a former teacher at the National University of Mongolia, handled all the documentation for the visit. While preparing for the visit, Galsan did all the typing on his own typewriter because there were no German typewriters available in the government offices. During hard times in 1992, Galsan imported 80 tons of food and medical supplies from Germany to Mongolia, which helped many Mongolians. The efforts and humanitarian gesture were deeply appreciated by those who benefited from it. The poem "Mother's Lullaby" and an excerpt from "Stories" further illustrate Galsan’s literary talents and sentimentality towards his homeland and ancestry, showing the blending of his personal experience and cultural heritage. Published in 2020 was his book "Er Har Sur," along with an excerpt from the "Novellas" book published in 2017.

Kh. Erdene-Ochir: I Tried to Express the Power and Spirit of Mongolian Horses in My Artwork

Published: 2025-03-09 | Translated from: montsame.mn

Daegu - Member of the Union of Mongolian Artists, painter Khassaanov Erdene-Ochir, has presented his solo art exhibition "Nomad," which showcases the nomadic lifestyle and culture of Mongolia through abstract art, at the "Omoke" art gallery in Daegu, South Korea. His main theme is the herds of horses on the steppe. In his works, he depicts the free and endless life of Mongolian nomads and their horses roaming the plains, breaking free from any specific format, and living in freedom. Kh. Erdene-Ochir graduated from the former Middle School of Fine Arts with a focus on painting from 1989 to 1992. Since participating in a joint exhibition of Mongolian and Korean artists in Daegu in 2017, this is his second solo exhibition in Korea. We asked him for more details about the exhibition. Kh. Erdene-Ochir: I tried to express the speed, strength, and spirit of Mongolian horses in my artwork. Last year, you held your first solo exhibition in Daegu. What is special about this exhibition? Yes, I held my previous exhibition at "Mona" art gallery in Daegu. This time, it is special because it is in a prestigious private gallery in the city, and I have increased the size of my artworks. The exhibition will continue until March 28. You express the nomadic lifestyle of Mongolia through the movement and energy of horse herds in your works. Can you elaborate on this? Yes. I grew up in the countryside. Therefore, I wanted to portray the speed, strength, and spirit of Mongolian horses through abstract art. On the other hand, I hope it will contribute even in a small way to promoting my home country abroad. Abstract art is a unique form that allows you to express things in terms of colors and composition, rather than realistic depiction. He enriched his exhibition with compositions of colors featuring horse images. Former head of the Daegu Artists Association, Kim Il Hwan, director of "Mona" art gallery, Kwon Dae Gi, artist Kim Jin Hyok, artist Kim Kyol Su, and many other artists attended the exhibition. During this event, journalist and photography enthusiast Kh. Erdenebulgan also showcased a few photographs highlighting the unique characteristics of the Gobi region. Artist Kim Kyol Su: I found new, fresh, and distinctive colors in his works. We have been connected through our art and have been good friends for many years. It is not easy for a Mongolian artist to hold an exhibition in Korea. I am glad we overcame these challenges together. I noticed fresh, distinctive colors and a lot of substantial works in his latest creations. Congratulations to him. Director of "Mona" art gallery, Kwon Dae Gi: I am pleased to see that Kh. Erdene-Ochir's works have improved since last year. Kh. Erdene-Ochir held his first solo exhibition in our "Mona" art gallery one year ago. I am delighted to see that his latest works have significantly improved in terms of color composition and harmony.

Love Under the Elm Tree

Published: 2025-03-09 | Translated from: unuudur.mn

Reviving plays from a theater's repertoire often holds significant contemporary value. Originally presented to audiences in 1996 at the Ulaanbaatar Drama Theatre's stage as "Desire in Hell," the play has now returned with a renewed cast under the title "Waiting for You Under the Elm Tree." Such a creative work has once again "come to life" on the central theater's stage. The cast for the roles was announced last month. "Waiting here for you When you return, I won’t hide my tears I'm waiting for you under the elm tree Refusing to believe in separation" This was first announced by the Ulaanbaatar Drama Theatre, stating, "The collaboration of T. Sergelen and O. Dolgor on March 5th." The general director of the play is N. Naranbaatar, a state prize winner and honored cultural leader, while the chief artist is T. Gankhuyag, an honored cultural worker, and G. Gan-Ochir is overseeing choreography and movement. Mongolian audiences will witness the play "Desire under the Elms," written in 1924 by the Nobel Prize-winning American playwright Eugene O'Neill. His works are deeply observed with the style of Greek tragic plays alongside the American dream and the materialism and class differences that surround it. "Waiting for You Under the Elm Tree" incorporates all of these elements, offering a wide scope of ideas and subjects. The play revolves around a seasoned farmer, Ephraim Cabot, who is 76 years old and has three grown sons. This role is performed by distinguished actor M. Tuvshinhuu. The roles of his sons are portrayed by B. Battogtokh as Simeon Cabot, young actor N. Munkh-Erdene as Peter Cabot, and T. Sergelen as Eben Cabot. The sons dislike, even hate, their father, and wish to own the estate their father has built. Ephraim Cabot is depicted as a harsh and cold man, who one day marries a young woman named Abbie Putnam. Sadly, she married him mainly to gain ownership of his estate and property. However, the youngest son, Eben, and Abbie fall in love with each other, which serves as the crux of the story. For O. Dolgor, a leading cultural worker, it has been three years since she joined the theater. Until now, she hadn’t had a chance to fully unveil her talent, but playing the lead role of Abbie Putnam in "Waiting for You Under the Elm Tree" marks her first lead role since joining the theater. Therefore, there is inevitably high audience expectation. She appears to be a rather "sensitive" person. Even the most talented artists face roles they cannot embody perfectly. Yet, underneath, O. Dolgor possesses an "indescribably beautiful" interior. Hence, she fits perfectly into the role of Abbie Putnam. In the context of the play, the main character carries the backbone of the story. Having seen O. Dolgor, a few things must be mentioned. Her voice seems more suitable for a dubbed movie actor than for the stage. Melodic yet distinct. It remains to be seen whether Abbie changed her, or if she simply overextended herself. Throughout the play, she seemed to be a whimsical person, laughing frequently. In the scenes where Abbie falls in love with Eben and expresses her feelings, it starts off as nonchalant, but towards the end it becomes serious and authentic, suggesting it might have been the actor’s technique to depict the true essence of her character. T. Sergelen is an artist known for creating expectations in the audience. Lacking self-confidence, filled with internal resentment towards his father, but with compassion opened by Abbie’s love, he remains as such until the play concludes. The backbone and the turning point of the play isn’t Eben, but Ephraim Cabot. Distinguished actor M. Tuvshinhuu expertly portrayed his character. He recently received this title, which he "defended" with this play. When the play paused after around 80 minutes from its start, I observed the attending audience as they calmly rose from their seats. Many senior actors, artists, members of the State University of Arts and Culture, and critics had gathered. I noticed O. Enkhtuul from the 1996 production as Abbie Putnam among them. Upon leaving the hall, women mainly gathered to take photos in front of the board written "Waiting for You Under the Elm Tree," illuminated by soft golden light, reminiscent of sunset.
