Intestinal Dysentery Detected in Drinking Water That Has Not Been Tested

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

Officials are confirming that bacteria causing intestinal dysentery have been detected in the drinking water of five apartment complexes around Zaisan.

The Director of the Water Authority, Z. Batbayar, advised: "Previously, bacteria were detected in the drinking water of apartments around Zaisan. It was also detected in a recent inspection. For residents with private wells, it is necessary to have their drinking water tested."

Although there has been little rain in Ulaanbaatar this summer, in cases of flooding, soil contamination through outhouses in ger districts has become a threat to drinking water. Therefore, the need has arisen for residents themselves to monitor whether the water they use daily meets drinking water requirements.

The Water Authority had previously announced that there are about 800,000 pit latrines in the capital, which is causing difficulties in providing the population with safe, clean water.

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

The Democratic Party (DP) group in the Parliament has issued the following statement.

The DP group in the Parliament expresses regret over the court decision of the Bayanzurkh, Sukhbaatar, and Chingeltei District Criminal Court of First Instance, which sentenced journalist Narangiin Unurtsetseg to 4 years and 9 months in prison.

The Democratic Party is a political force that has consistently protected human rights and freedoms. As independent media is a vital pillar of the democratic system, we declare that we will continue to steadfastly support the work of journalists in obtaining, publishing, and disseminating information, conducting free activities, and ensuring transparency in government activities.

On November 24, 2023, the Democratic Party group in the Mongolian Parliament issued a statement regarding the harassment, pressure, and intimidation by law enforcement agencies against journalist N. Unurtsetseg for exercising her legal right to publish, obtain, and disseminate information.

We believe that conducting the last two days of the trial of journalist Narangiin Unurtsetseg without a lawyer and behind closed doors has greatly eroded public trust in the judiciary.

The Democratic Party group in the Parliament will address the issue of ensuring the legal rights of journalist N. Unurtsetseg to the Judicial General Council and work to provide an explanation at the plenary session of the Parliament. We also hereby announce that we will develop a draft law to make court hearings open to the public, make court activities transparent to society, and protect the free activities of journalists, which will be submitted to the Parliament in the upcoming autumn session.

Monthly Salary of Parliament Members is 3.9 Million Tugriks

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

The monthly salary of a member of the State Great Khural (Parliament) is 3.9 million tugriks, which is even less than what those working in the mining sector receive.

In Mongolia, where the prices of goods and services have skyrocketed, it's not easy to live on this amount of salary. However, Parliament members don't complain about their salaries, which might be related to the fact that they have private companies on the side. Although they "scatter" billions in elections and then receive the aforementioned salary, it raises public suspicion. This is because they strive desperately to become a member of Parliament even though the salary is less than that of a state-owned company director.

People wonder if they are trying to protect the interests of their companies, or if there's an opportunity to take bribes while holding high government positions. There seems to be a reason why they struggle so hard for a salary that doesn't even cover the money spent on elections.

Over 200 Apartment Units to be Put into Use Through Redevelopment

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

The redevelopment project to demolish seven public apartment buildings that no longer meet usage requirements in the 10th khoroo of Sukhbaatar district and construct new buildings has been underway since last year when the contractor was selected. Now, two 16-story apartment blocks are set to be put into use next month.

In total, over 700 apartment units in seven blocks will be put into use, with the first two blocks ready to welcome residents.

The public apartment buildings, known as the "White Building of One Hundred Families," have been in use for over 70 years since they were first built. Residents united and raised the issue for about 20 years before the buildings were finally included in the redevelopment project last year, as they no longer met usage requirements and needed to be rebuilt.

For residents who have been living in the city center without indoor toilets or hot water, this is a clear demonstration that "if residents unite and raise issues, there is an opportunity to improve living conditions," as expressed by one resident about the 16-story apartment building set to be put into use next month.

The redevelopment project is being carried out by "Munkh Ariun Bulag" LLC, with oversight from the Ulaanbaatar Housing Corporation.

The remaining five blocks are planned to be put into use in 2025.

Previously, about 1,400 people from 352 households were living in the apartments that no longer met usage requirements. They have been living in rental housing until the construction is completed and the new buildings are ready for use. The Ulaanbaatar Housing Corporation has been responsible for providing rental housing.

North Korean Defector Appointed as South Korean Deputy Minister

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

Tae Yong-ho, a former deputy ambassador of North Korea to the United Kingdom, has been appointed to a position with deputy ministerial status, as announced by the South Korean government on Thursday.

He will lead the Presidential Committee on Unification Policy, which is responsible for matters related to the unification of Korea.

This appointment makes him the highest-ranking official among the thousands of North Korean defectors residing in South Korea.

Tae Yong-ho, now 62 years old, arrived in South Korea in 2016.

At that time, Pyongyang's central media labeled him as "human trash" and accused him of several crimes, including embezzlement of state property.

He became the first North Korean defector to become a member of South Korea's parliament in 2020.

Tae Yong-ho failed to win re-election in the regular parliamentary elections held in April this year.

"We see him as a person who can help peacefully unify the motherland based on the principles of liberal democracy and gain domestic and foreign support for this cause," said the South Korean president's press office.

Born in Pyongyang in 1962, Tae worked in North Korea's diplomatic service for nearly 30 years, starting at the age of 27.

He has stated that he defected from North Korea for the future of his children.

His memoir, which details the inner workings of Pyongyang's ruling circle, was published this year.

The South Korean National Intelligence Service recently announced that a diplomatic officer from the North Korean embassy in Cuba defected late last year.

Ri Il-kyu, 52, told the Chosun Ilbo newspaper that he had "lost faith in the Pyongyang regime."

Last Sunday, South Korea celebrated North Korean Defectors' Day for the first time. During this event, President Yoon Suk-yeol promised to increase financial support for defectors and provide tax benefits to companies that employ defectors.

Vietnam's Most Influential Leader Dies at 80

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

Vietnam's state media announced on Friday that Nguyen Phu Trong, who had served as the General Secretary of the ruling Communist Party since 2011, has passed away.

He was 80 years old this year.

In communist-ruled Vietnam, the head of the ruling party holds the highest position of power.

The day before his death, on Thursday, Nguyen Phu Trong had announced the transfer of his duties to the country's president, To Lam, citing health reasons.

Vietnam's state media reported that Trong died on Friday morning "after a long illness."

Nguyen Phu Trong is credited as a leader who played a crucial role in Vietnam's rapid economic growth. He was also known for his anti-corruption campaign.

Trong last met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who visited Vietnam at the end of June.

However, he had missed several official events since then.

Rumors about Nguyen Phu Trong's health had been circulating in recent years.

In 2018, Vietnam passed a law classifying the health information of high-ranking government officials as state secrets. In 2019, there were rumors that he had suffered a stroke.

During Trong's leadership years, Vietnam's GDP per capita more than doubled, free trade agreements were signed with Western and Asian neighboring countries, and relations with the United States were expanded.

He also paid special attention to maintaining the purity of the Communist Party.

Trong once said that if the party's reputation remained clean and did not lose the people's trust, Vietnam could be ruled for another thousand years.

As part of his anti-corruption campaign, about 200,000 officials have faced some form of punishment.

On the other hand, he was criticized for suppressing human rights, freedom of speech, and opposition views.

"His death marks the end of an era. The old-style communism, or some version of socialism, is gone. It's very difficult to predict what will happen next. The system remains, but the ideological space is empty," said Giang Nguyen, former head of BBC Vietnamese.

Gershkovich Sentenced to 16 Years in Prison

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

A Russian court has found U.S. journalist Evan Gershkovich guilty of espionage and sentenced him to 16 years in a strict-regime penal colony. The trial was held behind closed doors, prompting Gershkovich's employer, his family, and the White House to criticize the court's decision as false.

Gershkovich, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), was initially detained by security services in March while on a reporting trip in Yekaterinburg. Prosecutors accused him of working for the Central Intelligence Agency (FBI). Gershkovich, the WSJ, and the U.S. strongly deny these allegations.

This case marks the first time since the end of the Cold War that a foreign national has been held for an extended period on espionage charges in Russia. The judge granted a 15-day appeal period, during which the U.S. is expected to take measures to secure its citizen's release.

Almar Latour, the editor-in-chief of the Wall Street Journal, stated, "Evan has been in prison for 478 days, slandered for doing his job as a journalist. This court decision is entirely false! We will do everything we can to free Evan and support his family. Journalism is not a crime, and we won't rest until he is released. This must end now."

The U.S. accuses Russia of using Gershkovich as a bargaining chip for prisoner exchanges with Russians held in foreign prisons. However, Moscow is aware that the U.S. is willing to negotiate such exchanges to secure the release of its citizens, and the two countries have been discussing such an exchange.

Belarusian Court Sentences German Doctor to Death

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

A Belarusian court has sentenced a German doctor to death. Specifically, 30-year-old Rico Krieger is accused of six counts, including terrorism and illegal money issues. It is unclear why he is being charged with these six counts. Krieger's trial has been held behind closed doors since June and concluded on Friday.

Belarus is the last country in Europe to carry out the death penalty. It is usually imposed on those convicted of serious crimes such as treason.

According to the human rights organization Viasna, Krieger is accused of working as a mercenary, espionage, terrorism, creating an extremist group, and illegal activities involving firearms and explosives. This case marks the first time Belarus has tried and sentenced someone to death for allegedly working as a mercenary. Krieger worked as a doctor for the Red Cross Society based in Minsk, and it is unclear if he has the right to appeal.

Rico Krieger previously worked as a security officer at the US Embassy in Berlin before moving to the healthcare sector, working as a nurse and specializing in emergency care. The charges he faces may be related to the Kastus Kalinouski regime, which is connected to Belarusian-Polish writer, journalist, and lawyer who led an uprising against Russia in 1864 and was executed. It is unclear if Krieger is associated with this regime. Opposition media in Belarus have reported that he may be linked to a unit of the regime known as the "Western Battalion".

The Underpass Construction at Tavan Shar Railway Crossing is 80% Complete

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

As part of efforts to reduce traffic congestion in Ulaanbaatar city, a project is being implemented to construct underpasses at four locations: Tavan Shar crossing, Geological Central Laboratory intersection, "Hermes" center railway underpass, and Narantuul market four-way intersection.

The construction of the underpass beneath the railway at Tavan Shar crossing is 80% complete.

The underpass at this location is 160 meters long and 5 meters high, making it the largest of the four underpasses being built at the aforementioned locations. Two types of pumps will be installed in the underpass to drain rainwater and flood water.

B. Munkhbaatar, manager of the "Ulaanbaatar City Integrated Traffic Congestion Reduction Project Implementation Unit," provided information about the progress of this underpass construction.

He stated, "According to the initial plan, a 90-meter underpass was to be built. To comply with our standards, it has been modified to 191 meters.

Additionally, it includes a 900-meter line on the north side and a 1.3 km road from the 10th stop crossing to the "Enkhjin" shopping center on the south side. The underpass is 5.5 meters high and 7-8 meters wide, making it the largest underpass being built in Ulaanbaatar city.

The general contractor for the construction work is China Tiesiju Civil Engineering Group Co., Ltd. from the People's Republic of China, with domestic companies working as subcontractors. Temporary construction work began in August 2023, and currently, the main construction work at the railway intersection is nearing completion.

For this underpass construction, we are using a technology that allows us to continue the assembly work without interrupting railway traffic."

Ts. Turkhuu, General Manager of Ulaanbaatar City and Head of the Governor's Office, emphasized that once the underpass facility is put into operation, it will have the significant benefit of reducing traffic congestion in Songinokhairkhan district and Yarmag by 8-16%.

It's worth noting that road filling and adjustments will be made to put the underpass beneath the Tavan Shar railway into operation.

In this context, from July 17 to August 1, the road from Tavan Shar railway crossing to Tolgoit turn, i.e., the road in front of Nomin chain store, will be partially closed, one lane at a time. Therefore, citizens and drivers are urged to choose alternative routes when participating in traffic.

Water Pipeline Work Continues from Zuun Ail to Selbe Bridge

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

He said that due to the expansion of Ulaanbaatar's construction and population growth, water supply has become insufficient. In connection with this, a new 900 mm diameter pipeline is being installed at this location with funding from the Asian Development Bank. This project has been implemented since 2019, and the channeling work under the bridge was completed last winter. Now the pipeline connection work is being done. He also emphasized that in order to reduce smoke by converting the ger districts of Ulaanbaatar into apartments, the infrastructure is being addressed first.

R. Dambadarjaa, Control Engineer for Heat Supply and Ventilation at the Ulaanbaatar Investment Agency ONÖAATÜG:

-In terms of clean water pipeline installation, it is being directly buried in the ground without making a tunnel system because it does not require annual maintenance. The pipeline has a 50-60 year warranty. There is an existing 700 mm diameter steel pipe for clean water at this location, and with the additional installation of a 900 mm diameter pipeline, it will be possible to fully meet the clean water consumption of Bayanzurkh, Chingeltei, and Sukhbaatar districts.

B. Enkhmaa, Senior Specialist of the Prevention Department of NEMA, Major:

-Over the past 10 years, a total of 1,044 citizens have lost their lives due to water accidents nationwide. Looking at water accident cases by age, the majority are in their prime, aged 17-21. 67% are men, and 26% of accidents occurred in the Tuul River. We are placing warning signs and posters at what we call "black spots" in rivers. Boat patrols along the riverbanks are making demands and giving advice to people.

On the 15th of this month, officers made demands to intoxicated citizens, but they were not accepted. Shortly after leaving to make demands to other citizens, we received a call about a water accident. When we arrived at the scene, those intoxicated citizens who had not accepted the demands were there. One citizen had drowned. 55 adults and 13 children have lost their lives due to water accidents.

Officers are working without any shifts. Why? For the sake of the citizens. We are continuously working, talking, advising, and giving warnings so that not even one citizen, not even one child, loses their life.

You can indulge your child, but don't indulge them in river water.

Looking at water accident statistics, 14% of all citizens who can swim are involved in accidents. In other words, people who can swim are more likely to have accidents in water. This is a form of overconfidence in water. On the other hand, people from other regions are coming to the Tuul, Orkhon, Kharaa, and Kherlen rivers and having accidents. These citizens don't know the peculiarities of the area, and they're overconfident because they can swim. It's not just people who are drunk that are having accidents.

Also, inflatable toys in various animal shapes are being used a lot. Parents are using these things to let their children play. You can indulge your child, but don't indulge them in river water. These are not meant for use in flowing water. They are for use in small pools and still water.

There are cases of people losing their lives in still water, and while trying to cross water on motorcycles or horses

There are cases where family members have accidents at the same time. There are instances where one person has an accident in the water, and then another loses their life trying to save them.

In the last 10 years, 10,044 people have lost their lives in river water. Of these, 71.4% were adults and 28.9% were children. I hope people don't just listen and forget about the 68 citizens who lost their lives due to water accidents. If it hasn't happened to them or their close family members, they just listen, feel sorry, and move on. They're not heeding the warnings. You shouldn't open your mouth in water. Misfortune comes unexpectedly. Every citizen needs to be careful and alert. It's entirely possible to prevent this number 68 from increasing.

There are cases of people losing their lives in still water, and while trying to cross water on motorcycles or horses. In 2023, 72 cases of water accidents were recorded. This year, there's a possibility that more water accident cases will be recorded compared to previous years.

RECAP: New Government Cabinet Members Meet, Ministers Take Office

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

We bring you some of the notable events that took place over the past week.

After major national wrestling competitions, there is a rule to take doping test samples from the winning wrestlers. The Mongolian National Anti-Doping Organization provided information on this matter.

A representative from the Mongolian National Anti-Doping Organization said, "For this year's festival, MNADO worked together with a German laboratory. Doping test samples were taken from wrestlers and archery athletes. We received the initial results of the athletes' doping tests within 48 hours. The samples were sent to the German laboratory on July 14th. The laboratory then sent back results after 48 hours. Out of 48 athlete samples submitted, we have received results for 44 samples. The remaining 4 samples are awaiting additional testing. The need for additional testing does not necessarily mean doping was detected.

We cannot currently disclose the names of athletes whose test results have been received. This is because reviewing the names of the remaining four individuals risks damaging their reputations. Therefore, we will announce the names after the remaining test results are definitively confirmed. Because the testing is done very meticulously, it may take 10-14 days."

The head of the Cabinet Secretariat, N. Uchral, provided information about the decisions made at the government meeting. The Prime Minister gave several directives to the cabinet members regarding joint government issues.

N. Uchral, head of the Cabinet Secretariat, said, "We will create a unified portal for government organizations. This will allow citizens to monitor the implementation of ministry policies. We have also decided to integrate the official correspondence system to establish e-governance and reduce bureaucracy. Following international standards, the government structure and sectors will work closely and quickly with citizens. Although the structure and composition of the government have increased, we are adhering to the principle of not increasing staff numbers. Under the new law, the number of ministries and ministers has not increased, only the number of deputy prime ministers has increased. Therefore, we will not increase the number of ministry staff."

At the meeting, Education Minister P. Naranbayar was tasked with establishing an international engineering school, while B. Choijilsuren was assigned to address urgent energy issues as they arise.

The new government cabinet structure consists of 16 ministries and 22 ministers. The 16 deputy ministers of these ministries have been relieved of their duties.

Three of these ministers - S. Zulpkhar, Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Protection, B. Uyanga, Deputy Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, and M. Gankhüleg, Deputy Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry - had already left their deputy ministerial positions after becoming members of parliament. In addition to these, the following ministers have been relieved of their duties.

The 35th International Biology Olympiad was successfully held in Astana, Kazakhstan from July 7-14. At this Olympiad, participants competed in theoretical and practical work in four areas:

  • Biochemistry
  • Molecular Biology
  • Bioinformatics
  • Animal Anatomy and Physiology

G. MISHEEL (New Era School) and G. IREEDUI (Nature-Mother Lyceum School) won DOUBLE BRONZE MEDALS.

N. Önörtsetseg, founder of Zarig.mn website and journalist, was found guilty of "disseminating clearly false information to the public that damaged the honor, dignity, and business reputation of 4 named individuals and 1 legal entity", "disclosing personal legally protected secrets obtained without permission using electronic networks", "deliberately misrepresenting or concealing large amounts of taxable income for the purpose of tax evasion by an individual taxpayer or executive of a legal entity", "knowingly using assets, money, or income obtained from tax evasion crimes", and "storing information and documents classified as state secrets". She was sentenced to a total of 4 years and 9 months in prison, to be served in an open correctional facility.

The "Michel&Amazonka" brand created and presented the clothing to be worn by athletes representing Mongolia at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The design, construction, and intricate details of this clothing are now the center of attention for foreigners in the digital environment.

For instance, CNN in the United States highlighted the Mongolian athletes' Olympic clothing with the headline "Conquering the Internet".

They described the clothing as reflecting Mongolian tradition and culture, noting that it combines the colors of the Mongolian flag - blue, red, and white - and incorporates the "Soyombo" symbol.

N. Bayaraa and O. Yesügen, athletes from the national shooting team, were unable to compete in some events at the "Paris 2024" Olympics due to issues with the Mongolian National Olympic Committee (MNOC). Specifically, to qualify for the 50-meter shooting event at the Olympics, they need to compete in three events: 10-meter air gun, 10-meter mixed team, and the 50-meter event.

However, when submitting the competition entry from the Mongolian National Olympic Committee, they failed to include the two 10-meter events, sending incomplete documentation, which resulted in the athletes being unable to participate, much to their disappointment.

The MNOC Executive Board provided detailed information about the situation facing the shooting sports team athletes participating in the "Paris 2024" Olympic Games and reported that they are taking urgent measures. Soon after, MNOC President B. Battushig announced that the issue had been resolved and the athletes now have the right to participate in all their events.

On weekends, people tend to visit rivers and lakes more frequently. This is accompanied by an increase in water accidents. Therefore, we advise all citizens to be cautious of flood and water hazards during these days. Over the past 10 years, 1,044 people have lost their lives due to water accidents.

From 2017 to 2023, the majority of those who died in water accidents were between 17-21 years old. Also, 67.4% of adults who died in water accidents were men.

Since the beginning of 2024, 80 cases of water accidents have been recorded. Of these, 65 people lost their lives, including 52 adults and 13 children. Compared to the same period in 2023, the number of incidents has increased 3.9 times, and the number of deaths has increased 2.6 times. 14% of those who died in water accidents knew how to swim.

In the future, it will be possible to replace pipelines without digging up roads for 30-40 years

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

The work on expanding and renovating the heat and clean water pipeline from 350 mm to 530 mm diameter for 950 meters, from in front of the Drama Theater to the Teachers' Upper intersection on 2a main road, is continuing. In connection with this, the General Manager of Ulaanbaatar City and Head of the Governor's Office, Ts. Turkhuu, worked at the site with relevant officials.

He said, "The 2a main pipeline from in front of the Drama Theater to the Teachers' Upper intersection has not been comprehensively renovated since it was laid in the 1960s. However, due to the increase in the number of residential buildings and businesses in Ulaanbaatar, and the rise in heat consumption, it became impossible to transmit sufficient heat to the buildings in this location. By expanding and renovating the heat pipeline, we are now able to fully transmit heat. We are also introducing a tunnel system at this location."

Additionally, during the summer season, as part of the preparation for winter, hot water is restricted for one week to one month in certain locations to repair the heating network.

While this used to involve digging up roads and restricting traffic for a certain period, last year, with the introduction of a tunnel system in the Small Ring Road, I and X districts, conditions were created for continuous operation without further hot water restrictions in these locations. This is being continued this year with the introduction of tunnel systems in specific locations. As a result, it will be possible to carry out repairs, maintenance, and pipeline replacement without digging up roads again for the next 30-40 years.

Incidentally, the renovation of 15.6 km of heating main pipelines at 18 locations in the capital city began on July 16. There are over 390 km of heating network pipelines in Ulaanbaatar, most of which are 30-60 years old. This year, when carrying out major repairs on the heating network, the size of the pipelines is being expanded.

The Largest Technological Outage in History Occurred

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

A computer software error on Friday caused businesses and services in many countries around the world to be disrupted, creating chaos affecting hundreds of millions of people.

The cybersecurity company Crowdstrike's error in updating its program affected all computers and systems using Microsoft's Windows system.

The company's CEO apologized and announced that the error had been fixed, but acknowledged that operational disruptions could continue for several days.

Airlines, banking and financial institutions, and hospitals experienced operational delays related to Crowdstrike's error.

As a result, long passenger queues formed at airports, flights were delayed, and tickets were written by hand. According to sources, around 4,000 flights worldwide were delayed on Friday.

Health care services in the UK, Israel, and Germany came to a complete halt.

This incident has revealed how dependent the whole world has become on the systems of just a few companies.

Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz said in a statement on his X page: "We sincerely apologize to our customers, travelers, and everyone affected by this error. The error will be fixed after turning off your computer and restarting the system. Some systems may not be able to recover automatically, but we will work to fully restore the system of each of our customers."

A statement from Microsoft warned that systems may need to be turned off and on several times to fully recover.

Some users have reported that their computers returned to normal after shutting down and restarting 15 times.

Troy Hunt, one of the leading information security experts, wrote on his social page: "I don't think it's too early to say this. This is the biggest technology outage in history."

On Friday, Crowdstrike's stock price fell by about 12% on the stock market, while its main competitors SentinelOne and Palo Alto Networks saw their stock prices rise.

New COVID-19 Cases in Japan Increase for the 10th Consecutive Week

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

Japan's Ministry of Health reported on Friday that new coronavirus infections across the country have increased for the 10th consecutive week.

During the week ending July 14, approximately 5,000 hospitals and healthcare facilities in Japan recorded a total of 55,072 cases, which is 1.39 times higher than the previous week.

Since last spring, the KP.3 variant, derived from the Omicron JN.1 strain of the new coronavirus, has been dominant in the spread of infections.

Researchers at the University of Tokyo have determined that the KP.3 variant has a high infectivity rate and a strong ability to penetrate immunity established by vaccines and previous infections.

"It is highly likely that the 11th wave of COVID-19 has begun in Japan. It is important to prevent both contracting and spreading the infection at this time," said Naoki Hasegawa, head of the Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases and professor at Keio University.

Donald Trump: God was on my side that day

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

The Republican presidential candidate talked about how the assassination attempt unfolded last Saturday.

He described surviving the assassination attempt by saying "God was on my side."

The 78-year-old former president, with his ear bandaged, said on stage: "I want to share with you all what I felt at that moment. But this will be the first and last time I talk about this. Because talking about it hurts my heart. The bullet missed ending my life by a quarter of an inch. I heard a loud noise and felt something hit my right ear very hard. Then I thought 'Wow, what was that?' and told myself 'Only a bullet would sound like that' and when I brought my right hand up to my ear and lowered it, my hand was covered in blood."

He continued: "As the very brave Secret Service agents ran onto the stage to protect me by covering me, bullets were still whizzing by. Blood was spilling everywhere, but because God was on my side, I felt very safe. Amazingly, if I hadn't moved my head just before the assassin pulled the trigger, the bullet would have hit me directly, and I wouldn't be here tonight."

Ozzy Osbourne: Britney Spears is an old, sad person

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

During "The Osbournes Podcast", Ozzy Osbourne described singer Britney Spears as "old" and "sad". He said, "I'm tired of seeing old Britney's dancing videos. She must be too sad, right? Really sad." Ozzy Osbourne's wife and children agreed, and Britney Spears expressed her displeasure with their opinion.

Spears wrote on her social media page about the Osbourne family, quoting from Kate Beckinsale's 2001 movie "Serendipity": "Amazingly cruel people [Beckinsale] should make age-appropriate content." Beckinsale, who is in her fifties, is known for her trolling on social media.

Then, responding to Sharon Osbourne calling Spears a "poor thing", Spears said, "I'm not such a poor thing! I taught dance to several teenagers last week. Most of the kids were either too thin or overweight. I think we should always help others and provide emotional support, knowing how it feels to be criticized by others. Also, the Osbourne family is too boring, what else can career-declining people do but attack others?"

D.Dashmaa: I thought I would participate in the construction of Erdenet and work well to honor my parents' names

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

"We have a greenhouse, we can provide for our vegetable needs. In winter, we harvest 70-80 kg of sea buckthorn. More grows, but we can't harvest it all. In our yard, we have many types of trees and bushes like blackcurrant, hawthorn, and gooseberry. The hawthorn and strawberries are ready, you can go out and pick some to eat after your meal. The ones grown in the shade are a bit hard. We old folks also look after our grandchildren. Recently, however, we've been relieved from childcare duties. The children are working," says this person named D.Dashmaa.

S.Khishigsuren and D.Dashmaa are the owners of the second batch of assignments in Erdenet. The first batch arrived in 1974. They met in Erdenet in 1975 and have been living in this city ever since.

As they were informed in advance that journalists and photographers were coming from the city, they had their photo albums out. Whether they had prepared what to say or not, they started talking as soon as we entered their home.

Mrs. D.Dashmaa:

-I'm originally from Teshig soum of Bulgan aimag. On July 6, 1975, after graduating from high school in Nalaikh, I received an assignment here and came with a ZIL 130 truck. I was 18 years old. I'm an old-timer, right? I came with the desire and aspiration to participate in the construction of Erdenet. We were invited to come. Here I met my spouse, we became a family in 1976, and our first child was born in 1977.

My husband came in 1975 with an assignment signed by Lodon's Tudev after being discharged from the army. They came as part of the Mongolian Revolutionary Youth League convoy. My husband was in the third, and I was in the second group. I wonder if those buildings are still there? When we arrived, the Russian school had already been built. It had the status of a village in Bulgan aimag then. Russian and Mongolian military units and construction units had already arrived. There were many Russian specialists. The head of the Unified Administration of Mongolian Workers was a man named Zhikshu Lante Adelo Vasilyevich, an Honored Builder of the USSR.

Walking down the street, most were Russians. People came from every country that was part of the USSR. On my first day, while walking on the street, I asked someone for the time, and they shrugged their shoulders. It turned out to be a Tatar person. From the outside, they looked just like a Mongolian. The construction of Erdenet was heavily reported on TV. Seeing that, I decided to come. I thought I would come here, work well, and honor my parents' names. I thought I would fulfill my purpose of being born as a human.

-What kind of work did you do? -As an electrician, I do building montage. I prepare all the electrical items like wires for light transmission, switch bases, etc. I first worked in wooden buildings that wouldn't leak in the rain. Soon, Construction Industrial Combine-1 and 2 came into operation, and they started making prefabricated housing panels. Except for the electrical shop, everyone works in shifts. We go in convoys like the Erdenet workers do now. If you miss the bus, you'll be late for work.

It rains a lot, the streets have no roads, just thick mud. Once, as I was running for the bus, my shoe got stuck in the mud, and since there was no other transport besides the bus, I grabbed my shoe and ran. When you're late for work, the Russian boss points at his watch. You get very scared, wondering what to do. When the salary came, I thought they might have deducted some money, but they hadn't. I was so happy then, got encouraged, and tried hard not to be late again. We adhered to time very strictly; we didn't have the concept of work interruption.

The Russians go to their homeland for vacation. When they return, they bring nice gifts. At first, I didn't know to give gifts when they left. Later, I started giving souvenirs from here. After they returned to their homeland, we kept in touch with our Russian friends through letters and talked on the phone when the post office was open.

The USSR selected and sent their most experienced, best specialists who excelled in their work and fields to Mongolia. It's a blessing to have worked with such amazing people. They taught us how to work in detail. When they advised that one profession wasn't enough and we should have dual professions, I finished my work and attended evening classes, becoming a welder in addition to being an electrician.

We brought building panels manufactured in Darkhan here and built prefabricated buildings with cranes. Many Russians worked in the assembly team. We built five-story apartments. The most beautiful moment was climbing onto the roof of our building and doing the roofing. We all used to shout "Hurrah!" From 1980, Mongolian brigades started building independently. Later, I worked as a youth caretaker and educator.

I used to wonder when Erdenet would become a city like Ulaanbaatar. Young people with bubbling spirits from many aimags gathered here. Now I see how beautiful our city has become. In 2017, I became an honorary citizen of Erdenet city. I was also awarded the Order of the Polar Star for participating in the city's construction. Through your website, I'd like to send my 50th anniversary greetings to all the assignment owners.

I'm very proud of everyone who participated in this construction. Mrs. D.Dashmaa said that the pioneers of Erdenet are decreasing year by year. A total of 6,000 Russians and Mongolians participated in building this city. 1,000 of them were assignment owners.

Gun-Aajavin Davaa: We Came to Build Erdenet City with Only the Clothes We Were Wearing

Published: Sat, 20 Jul 2024

This elderly man, who says "When I came here 50 years ago, there were only a few wagons and tents," is named Gun-Aajavin Davaa. He is one of the "sent owners". At that time, the government decided to build the Erdenet factory in an open field called the Erdenet Committee of Bulgan aimag. The Central Committee of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party made the decision not only to build the factory but also to establish a modern city for the thousands of workers and their families to live in.

Mr. Gun-Aajavin Davaa spoke as follows.

-The First Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Yu. Tsedenbal, issued a decree to establish Erdenet with the power of youth. Then the Temporary Union Committee appointed young people from 18 aimags to Erdenet. We were called the "sent owners". Seven aimags didn't send people here. The three Gobi aimags, three eastern aimags, and Selenge didn't send owners. Selenge had many state farms and was a place with a lot of work. In the early 1970s, the eastern and Gobi aimags had few human resources.

We came from Ulaanbaatar on October 1, 1974, 56 of us. I was 29 years old. Members of the Revolutionary Youth Union wore a badge with five red points on their lapels, it was impressive. I had become a member. Before coming here, I had worked for five years with Russians in the seventh field geology unit of Tsenkhermandal soum in Khentii aimag, carrying stones. When the Russian engineer split stones with long strides, two Mongolian workers would pick them up and collect samples when told to. We would drill. So I can speak a little Russian.

While there, when I came to the city, I saw from a street sign that young people were going to Erdenet Mountain. When I asked where Erdenet Mountain was, they said in Bulgan. No one forced us, no meetings were held, people weren't gathered. The Party Central Committee issued an appeal, and the Union Central Committee issued a resolution. The sent owners became very famous. It wasn't a mandatory duty like military service, no one promised anything. We came of our own will. I decided to go and came alone as I wasn't married and didn't have children. No one advised me, I came without knowing I would get a high salary. At that time, youth organizations were very active. That probably influenced me to come here.

Now only three out of 56 people are alive. We came with the clothes we were wearing and small hand suitcases. It was like joining the army. When many boys and girls came together, identical wooden buildings were built for us in the Geology village. Four of us in a room. Beds, chairs, tables, even face and hand towels were ready. With an allowance of 350 tugriks. That was a lot of money at that time. Then we worked side by side with Soviet builders and built Erdenet city. We worked hard. Where the city is now, there were colorful flowers, a lot of red potatoes growing, no buildings at all, it was pristine. The tractor that first scraped the city's soil has been made into a monument.

Most were young people without professions or education, so after finishing work in the evening, they would attend skill improvement classes and clubs. Interpreters N. Norovrentchin and N. Nyamasuren would translate the lessons of the Russian teachers. Only ZIL 130 and dump truck drivers had professional certificates. I became qualified in drilling and blasting.

The first United Administration of Mongolian Workers was established under the Ministry of Construction and Construction Materials. That's how I started my career. From August 20, 1974, to December 31, 1976, a total of 1000 young people came by assignment. As many young people gathered, later they started bringing the sent owners with their families. I went to Arkhangai, Uvurkhangai, and Khuvsgul to bring young people who had received assignments. The aimag's union committee chairman would give assignments with his signature.

Soon, in 1976, Erdenet city was established, and we received passports. There was a big sign in Russian saying "We will build the Socialist Erdenet city here."

We put the first phase of the factory into operation in December 1978. Soon, trade, police, grocery stores, pharmacies, weather stations, and communications opened in the city. The largest of these was the organization called the United Administration of Mongolian Workers. Its head was Galsantseren. When this organization was disbanded in 1991, many people became unemployed.

There were brigades of masons, decorators, transporters. In the spring of 1976, in April, we started building the First Ten-Year School and finished it by September 1, in autumn. That's how energetically we worked. The Russian school was separate.

Soon, the Council of Sent Owners was established with five members. I worked as its director. Four educators worked and conducted art and sports activities among the sent owners. We were responsible for the discipline and conduct of those young people. Although thousands of young people gathered from all directions, there were no fights or conflicts. There were many soldiers in the Gobi. Their leadership was separate, we commanded our workers. The Union Central Committee's personal representative, Davaagiin Purevdorj, would come once a quarter to inspect. The Russian commandant's interpreter, Pagmyn Tsetsegee, called Galya, is still in Erdenet.

It was promised that sent owners who worked well for three years would be sent to the school of their choice in the USSR (now Russia). Banzragch was the party committee chairman of Erdenet. The bureau would discuss and decide who to send. They would say, "Comrade, study well and come back to work in Erdenet," and send them off.

The first 300 workers of the factory studied in courses in the USSR. Many people from the sent owners joined the factory. From them, one became a Hero of Labor, five became honored miners, and one became an honored builder. I wanted to go to a course, but they didn't send me.

It was planned to build a total of 12 residential districts in Erdenet city, but in 1990 the democratic revolution happened, and this work wasn't fully realized. The sixth district had just been started. The Soviet soldiers and builders who were here returned to their homeland. But the sent owners didn't return, most of them worked here until retirement.

The sent owners are golden swallows. We spent our youth here. While soldiers built Darkhan city, sent owners built Erdenet. We also worked in Baganuur and Khutul, building many buildings. I also worked on building the "Bread and Sweets" factory in Ulaanbaatar. At that time, there were no unemployed people. In the socialist era, organization was excellent. There was a government decision to make Erdenet, Darkhan, Bor-Undur, and Khutul cities with only apartments, without gers.

Out of 1000 sent owners, 150 people are now living in Erdenet city. Although Mr. G. Davaa is 79 years old, he tells the story from 50 years ago as if it happened yesterday. It's admirable that he mentions his coworkers of half a century by their full names. On the 1st and 2nd of next month, there will be a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the sent owners' arrival in Erdenet. Looking back on the history of the sent owners in anticipation of this round anniversary.

To be continued.
