100 Years of Mongolia Still Not Rid of Wooden Toilets

Published: Tue, 16 Jul 2024

The national Naadam festival is in full swing, continuing with aimag and soum celebrations. Nearly half of Mongolia's 330 soums in 21 aimags are celebrating historic anniversaries this year. For example, 10 soums in Zavkhan aimag have round-number anniversaries. The soum anniversary celebrations are scheduled between July 17-27. Specifically, Shiluustei soum's anniversary is on July 17-18, Otgon soum on July 18-19, Bayantes, Tsagaankhairhan, and Urgamal soums on July 19-20, Bayankhairhan and Durvuljin soums on July 20-21, Songino soum on July 21-22, Santmargaz soum on July 26-27, and Yaruu soum on July 26-27, all celebrating their 100th anniversaries, and so on in a long list. At least 2-3 soums in each aimag have round-number anniversaries.

Five in Arkhangai aimag, three in Sukhbaatar aimag, seven in Bayankhongor aimag, five in Khovd aimag, nine in Uvurkhangai aimag, one in Khentii, three in Khuvsgul, five in Dundgovi aimag, four in Dornod aimag, 11 in Dornogovi aimag, six in Uvs aimag, six in Bulgan, 16 in Govi-Altai aimag, nine in Tuv aimag, and 17 soums in Selenge aimag are celebrating their 100th anniversaries.

However, what level of development have these aimags and soums with 100 years of history achieved? In reality, there's no point in talking about development and progress. The development of soums has been neglected, and their populations have been fleeing to urban areas for a long time.

How appropriate is it to organize celebrations costing billions while still not getting rid of wooden toilets in modern times? There are no international standard schools or inter-soum hospitals in rural soums. The roads are poor. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that almost nothing has changed or developed since 100 years ago. When you enter a remote soum, you're greeted by wooden toilets.

However, the Citizens' Council of Bukhmurun soum in Uvs aimag has announced that they will use all donated money for their 100th anniversary to get rid of wooden toilets. With donations from native and resident citizens, instead of giving a car to the champion wrestler or a six-year-old horse, they plan to provide 200 households with modern toilets. This is a good example.

Citizens are criticizing the practice of spending so much money on horse racing and wrestling competitions to celebrate historic anniversaries, rather than creating jobs in their soums, building roads, hospitals, and kindergartens. There have been instances of mothers suffering complications after childbirth due to cold maternity hospitals in local areas, which they have shared on social media.

The Economic Policy and Competitiveness Research Center presented its 11th annual report on the competitiveness of Mongolia and its aimags in 2023. According to this study, Orkhon, Dornogovi, Darkhan-Uul, Umnugovi, and Govisumber aimags were announced as the leaders. Officials say this study calculates the development and competitiveness of Mongolia's 21 aimags based on a total of 175 criteria in four main categories: economic strength, governance, business efficiency, and infrastructure. It's time to prioritize the country's development instead of celebrating historical anniversaries for show.

Did Russia Influence France's Agreement with Mongolia?

Published: Tue, 16 Jul 2024

The French government had been negotiating with the Mongolian government last October on a $1.7 billion uranium project. Accordingly, the project was to be finalized and an investment agreement signed in 2023, but it has been postponed due to several issues. It is unclear when the uranium project will be finally approved.

While Franco-Mongolian cooperation was expanding, Russia proposed to build a small nuclear power plant in Mongolia's territory. Accordingly, Russia's Rosatom company signed a memorandum of understanding with Mongolia's state-owned Mon-Atom company to build a small-scale, land-based nuclear power plant (LNP) in Mongolia.

The French government may have postponed its agreement with Mongolia due to the tense geopolitical situation and Western sanctions against Moscow.

France used to source its uranium from countries like Russia and Niger, but it canceled its contract with Moscow due to the war situation. Also, in June, the Niger government suspended the uranium mining permit granted to France.

Since last April, the French government has been receiving additional uranium from Canada, a country with vast territory, small population, and one of the leading countries in natural resources. The Cigar Lake mine in Saskatchewan, Canada is one of the world's richest uranium deposits. The McClean Lake mill that processes uranium from this mine is operated by a subsidiary of the Orano Mining group.

Orano Mining is the French state-owned, second-largest uranium processing group in the world that was supposed to work with Mongolia, and it owns 9% of the world's uranium production.

40% of the uranium produced from the Cigar Lake mine is sold to EDF, a French multinational electric utility company. As Canada's uranium reserves amount to 588,500 tons, equivalent to 10% of the world's known reserves, France wants to increase its uranium production from this country.

Mongolian Cargo Stays 85-90 Days at Tianjin Port

Published: Tue, 16 Jul 2024

As of June 2024, 5,450 containers were stuck at Tianjin port, as we reported earlier. Specifically, containers that have arrived at Tianjin port are creating a bottleneck as they are unable to proceed to Mongolia.

Regarding the issue at Tianjin port, the Minister of Port Affairs B. Tulga gave a briefing on June 7, 2024. He said, "The majority of Mongolia's import containers are unloaded at Tianjin port and transported to Mongolia. About 3,000-4,000 containers are unloaded at Tianjin port monthly. According to the railway agreement between Mongolia and China and the port agreement, two trains of containers are taken to Mongolia daily. Unfortunately, this number has been decreasing every day since the beginning of the year.

To resolve this, relevant organizations are working in task forces. As it is related to Mongolia's trade and economy, it needs attention. However, no definite response has been received from the Chinese side until today."

According to information provided by the Mongolian Freight Forwarding Association on this issue, "Between July 1 and July 9, a total of 11 trains departed from Tianjin port to the Erenhot-Zamyn-Uud route. There is a backlog of about 10,600 TEU or about 5,300 containers waiting at Tianjin railway station to go to Mongolia. Containers arriving at Tianjin port are staying an average of 85-90 days before departing. Relevant organizations are working to increase the capacity of the yard (Binhai Zhong Yuan) where cargo to be transported by road is inspected and sealed."

Domestic Travelers to Spend Around 860 Billion Tugriks on Travel

Published: Tue, 16 Jul 2024

During the Naadam holiday period, from July 9-13, 2024, 357,916 vehicles traveled to rural areas through six toll points around Ulaanbaatar city. The "Domestic Travelers' Naadam Travel" survey was conducted jointly by the Ulaanbaatar Tourism Association and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. 24.7% of all travelers indicated they plan to spend 1-1.2 million tugriks on their trip. 15% plan to spend 1.3-1.5 million tugriks, and 13% plan to spend over 2.5 million tugriks, according to the survey results.

Calculating the money circulation generated by domestic travelers in Mongolia, it is likely to create an economic turnover of at least 340 billion tugriks and up to 1.1 trillion tugriks. Based on this calculation, it is estimated that an average of about 860 billion tugriks of economic circulation will be generated.

The survey noted that the main concentration of travelers is in the Khangai region, namely Arkhangai, Övörkhangai, Zavkhan, Khövsgöl provinces, and around the capital. Domestic travelers also tend to visit trending attractions and destinations each year.

For example: - In 2015 and 2016, Khövsgöl - In 2017, Mukhartin Gol - In 2018, Khetsuu Khad - In 2019, Buir Lake - In 2020 and 2021, Altai Tavan Bogd were the main destinations for domestic travelers. - In 2022, while there was still a certain level of travel to the above places, the new trending destination was expected to be around Govi-Altai province and Eejkhairhan. - In 2023, Bayankhongor and Govi-Altai provinces became new trends, and Darkhan-Selenge province was also crowded with tourists.

This year, the majority of tourists are heading to Arkhangai, Övörkhangai, and Khövsgöl provinces.

0.6 km road connecting Eermel Street with Tuul Street opened for use

Published: Tue, 16 Jul 2024

A 0.6 km road connecting Eermel Street with Tuul Street has been opened for use. The construction of this road, which runs from Orkhon University southwards to School 115, connecting Eermel Street with Tuul Street, began in 2022. However, the project was delayed for two years due to land acquisition issues. The road was finally opened for traffic on the 10th of this month.

The road has a seven-meter wide driving lane and 1.5-meter wide pedestrian paths on both sides. A drainage system has also been installed. While the road was opened for traffic on the 10th of this month, lighting work is still ongoing as of today.

With the opening of the Eermel Street road, traffic turning left from Tuul Street to Zaisang Street during peak morning and evening hours will be reduced. This will also decrease the obstruction to vehicles traveling from the intersection of the University of Agriculture towards Chinggis Avenue via Zaisang Street.

Additionally, people traveling from Tuul Street to Chinggis Avenue can now use Eermel Street, reducing the intersection point at the Asia-Pharm pharmacy three-way junction and increasing positive impact on traffic safety, according to traffic management experts.

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS TO VISIT DURING THE LONG VACATION DAYS

Published: Tue, 16 Jul 2024

We are compiling information about special exhibitions that students, parents, grandparents, and young children can visit during their summer and scheduled vacations to take pride in their Mongolian homeland. All the museums mentioned here are located in Ulaanbaatar.

11 boxes of cargo have arrived from France. It's a collection of artifacts belonging to Mongolia, scattered in every corner of the world.

In particular, it includes relics from the Hunnu and Turkic periods that are not found in Mongolia, classic ceramics from the Yuan dynasty, and selected cultural heritage from the Khitan period. These exhibits are being displayed at the Chinggis Khaan National Museum under the theme "Chinggis Khaan: How Mongolians Changed the World". The exhibition is currently open to the public and will continue until August 25th. Please click HERE to read the report prepared from the exhibition.

The National Museum of Mongolia has opened a temporary exhibition called "HEAVENLY MELODY HORSE-HEAD FIDDLE" to the public, showcasing a selection from their collection of horse-head fiddles to celebrate the Mongolian National Great Festival Naadam.

Every nation and nationality has a musical instrument they are proud of. It's impossible to imagine the Mongolian people and nomadic culture without horses and the horse-head fiddle. The horse-head fiddle is the poetic harmony and melodious rhythm of the name "Mongol". The melody of the horse-head fiddle, which has been resonating in the honored place of Mongolian nomads for centuries, reminds us of everything Mongolian - the steppe wind, the rumble of horses, the sound of feasts, and children's laughter.

This exhibition displays about 30 horse-head fiddles made by craftsmen from various regions over a hundred years from the late 19th century to the 1980s. Among them are many interesting items, including the Ikel, considered the ancestor of the horse-head fiddle, the Tsuukh fiddle with an ox bladder soundbox, fiddles with slogans on their soundbox like "Increase our livestock to 200 million heads", fiddles with heads of five types of livestock, snake-shaped bows, and fiddles that can be disassembled and fit into their soundbox for nomadic moves. These musical instruments are not only exquisitely crafted but also highly significant as they narrate the evolution of fiddle music and illustrate the history and appearance of their times.

The exhibition will be open to the public until August 2nd.

"From Undur Gegeen G.Zanabazar, the head of Khalkha religion, to the eighth Bogd, eight Bogds have graced the Mongolians. These Khutagts were dedicated to the Danshig Naadam, or the ceremony of firm establishment. This ceremony of offering firm establishment is a blessing for long-lasting peace and togetherness with the people.

Therefore, we have displayed thangkas and embroidered appliqués of the three longevity deities - Ayush, White Tara, and Jugdernamjil - at the head of our exhibition.

One of the major parts of the Danshig offering ceremony is undoubtedly the dance of the five dakinis. Our Bogd Khaan Palace Museum preserves the original costumes of these five dakinis. We are displaying them exactly as they were used and worn in the late 19th and early 20th centuries," explained G.Bayarmaa, a researcher at the Bogd Khaan Palace Museum, about the "Dance of the Fierce Protectors" exhibition.

Along with the aforementioned "Dance of the Fierce Protectors" exhibition, the "Assembly of Twenty-One Taras" exhibition has been opened. It is possible to see 21 Taras handcrafted by Undur Gegeen himself, which appear in the small ritual dance or small tsam.

These exhibitions will close tomorrow, on the 17th of this month.

An exhibition about the Mazaalai bear, which remains in small numbers in the Gobi Altai region of Mongolia, is being displayed in the exhibition hall of the Natural History Museum and is open to the public throughout this summer.

By visiting this exhibition, you will not only see the taxidermy of the world's only Mazaalai bear, but also selected works by Mongolian professional artists on the theme of Mazaalai, interesting photographs captured by Mazaalai researchers, and learn more about the Mazaalai. The more we know, the more we protect.

The exhibition will be open to the public until September 15th.

The regular "Digital Museum" exhibition, which has become a tradition of the G.Zanabazar Fine Arts Museum, has opened.

With the help of artificial intelligence, it aims to provide children and young people with a closer and more tangible experience of the museum's exhibits through modern solutions, and to promote and spread cultural heritage to viewers and visitors.

The exhibition has been open to the public since the 10th of this month and will be open daily from 09:00 to 17:30.

We are compiling information about special exhibitions that students, parents, grandparents, and young children can visit during their summer and scheduled vacations to take pride in their Mongolian homeland. All the museums mentioned here are located in Ulaanbaatar.

PHOTO: Statue of Mongolian Bull Symbolizing Wealth and Growth Unveiled

Published: Tue, 16 Jul 2024

The 100th anniversary of the establishment and development of the banking sector in Mongolia is being celebrated. In connection with this, a bull statue, symbolizing the banking and financial sector, has been erected. The opening ceremony of this statue took place today. Around the world, in major economic and financial zones, the image of a bull is used as a symbol of strength, power, and success.

Following this tradition, the Mongolian banking and financial sector has created a bull statue infused with the country's customs and symbolism.

The statue is located in Chingeltei district, at the intersection west of the Mongolian Bank. The design includes a gravel path, green space, and stone benches separating it from the residential buildings and service areas behind the statue.

The statue is 5.5 meters long, 2.5 meters high, made of bronze, with its base covered in 400-600 year old Mongolian white granite.

This statue is distinctly different from realistic depictions, with an intensified powerful movement incorporated into a semi-circular shape, designed to appear light and detached from the dusty human world, existing in the air. The statue was created to embody the principles of the financial market: circular, rotating, growing, and increasing.

During the opening ceremony, B. Lkhagvasuren, President of the Mongolian Bank, said, "The financial market is imagined through the depiction of two animals. The images of a bull and a bear symbolize growth and advancement. In the US and major European cities with highly developed stock exchanges, statues of these animals have been erected. As we all know best, there is a famous bull statue in New York City, USA. In that sense, we have erected a Mongolian bull statue as a symbol of the growth and development of Mongolia's financial market. This statue was created by Mongolian sculptors, with D. Ankhbayar as the designer. Financial institutions are concentrated in the center of Ulaanbaatar. Therefore, placing this bull statue in the city center will contribute to tourism as tourists will be able to see and appreciate it."

Sculptor D. Ankhbayar said, "We completed this statue in one month. It was a task to be done in an extremely short time, so we were able to finish it because we had a team of skilled sculptors. I would like to thank the team that worked together on this occasion. When I first came up with the design idea for the statue, I thought it should have an energetic composition because the banking and financial sector has ups and downs. We also worked from the perspective that it should incorporate Mongolian culture and spirit. Our team has previously worked on projects such as the golden falcon and gate of the Genghis Khan Museum."

It was reported that this creation is significant not only for adding to the aesthetics of the capital and becoming a tourist destination but also for promoting the culture of fundamental worship that symbolizes wealth, growth, and spiritual values. Representatives from banks and financial institutions participated in this event.

As for our country, N. Bayaraa and E. Davaakhuu in the men's shooting category, and O. Yesugen in the women's category will represent our country in Paris. However, information has been circulated on social media that "O. Yesugen and N. Bayaraa will not be able to participate in the shooting event of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games due to the fault of MNOC". In connection with this, MNOC made an announcement.

Ch. Naranbaatar, President of MNOC: "There are 10 days left until the start of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. In connection with this, Mongolian athletes have received and confirmed their rights and are preparing to participate in the Olympics. This morning, an emergency meeting of the MNOC Executive Council was held. At this meeting, regarding the issue related to the Mongolian Shooting Sports Federation, three athletes from MSSF have received their rights. After this, after the deadline, sports federations reported late about additional events. We have sent letters to international organizations several times regarding this issue. At today's meeting of the Executive Council, we decided to send an official letter to the International Olympic Committee, the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee, and the International Shooting Sport Federation. We have said that it is impossible because the deadline for submitting athletes' applications has closed. Nevertheless, we decided to send a letter to the International Olympic Organizing Committee about this in the interest of our athletes and the possibility that they might be able to participate in their competition. However, it is not guaranteed that the right to participate in the Olympics will be opened. We work with 60-70 sports committees. The main goal of the federations is that they employ specialized professionals."

E. Badar-Uugan, Secretary General of MNOC: "On June 9, a letter was received from international organizations to MSSF and MNOC to urgently confirm and send the names and distances of their athletes by June 21. Within this framework, O. Enkhsaikhan, Secretary General of MSSF, sent a letter requesting to confirm three athletes in three distances. During this period, no request was received to grant additional rights to shoot at 10 meters distance."

Renovation of 30-60 Year Old Heating Pipelines Has Begun

Published: Tue, 16 Jul 2024

The renovation of 15.6 km of main heating pipelines has begun at 18 locations in the capital city. There are over 390 km of heating pipelines throughout Ulaanbaatar, most of which are 30-60 years old. Due to the increase in the number of residential buildings and organizations in Ulaanbaatar, and the consequent rise in heat consumption, there is a need to expand the pipeline network. Therefore, this year's major repairs of the heating network will include expanding the size of the pipelines.

The repair and renovation of the heating network from the State Academic Drama Theater to the Teacher's College on Jamyangun Street in the 1st khoroo of Sukhbaatar district starts today. In connection with this, Ulaanbaatar City General Manager Ts. Turkhuu visited the site. He said, "The Governor's Office of Ulaanbaatar City and Ulaanbaatar District Heating Network JSC, among other organizations, have started preparing for the winter of 2025 and begun summer major repairs. We started preparing for major repairs from July 1st and have now begun the repair work. Due to the major repairs of the heating network, hot water restrictions have been imposed in some locations. However, we are carrying out the repair work without imposing restrictions on clean, cold water."
