The Economic Times: India Ready to Transport Coking Coal from Mongolia

Published: Mon, 15 Jul 2024

Delhi is planning to import coking coal from Mongolia on a trial basis from the end of this month, as it seeks to diversify its imports of the key steel-making raw material to reduce its over-dependence on Australia.

Steel makers, including JSW Steel and state-owned Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), are ready to transport coking coal from Mongolia after months of negotiations, according to sources who wished to remain anonymous.

JSW Steel is expected to receive about 30,000 tons of coking coal from Mongolia, while SAIL is likely to receive 3,000-5,000 tons, the sources said.

For JSW Steel, this will be the second shipment since India's largest steel producer bought 8,000 metric tons of coking coal from Mongolia in 2021, according to the sources.

The supply was to come to India via Chinese ports, but Indian authorities believe they should not fully rely on China for a stable supply of coking coal from Mongolia.

India-China relations have been strained since a military clash on the disputed Himalayan border in June 2020, which resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers.

India is trying to find other routes to supply Mongolian coking coal to India. Indian mills have asked their government to help develop a regular supply route for coking coal from Mongolia. Mongolia, rich in mineral resources but lacking reliable transportation routes, is struggling to sell its raw materials to countries like India.

Indian steel companies consume 70 million tons of coking coal annually, with imports accounting for about 85% of the country's total needs. Steel mills in India, the world's second-largest crude steel producer, are grappling with volatile supplies of Australian coking coal, which accounts for more than half of India's annual imports.

Indian steel makers have increased imports of coking coal from Russia in recent months, taking advantage of discounted prices as a result of Western sanctions against Moscow due to the Ukraine war. Russia sold 3.3 million tons of coking coal in the first half of 2024, becoming India's third-largest supplier, according to commodity consultancy BigMint.

The Origin and History of the National Great Festival

Published: Thu, 11 Jul 2024

The National Great Festival is the main expression of Mongolian national identity, history and culture that distinguishes it from many other countries. The Mongolian Naadam, which symbolizes the sun, moon and fire that have been shining forever, and foresees unity, statehood and pride, has meanings of noble existence, harmonious coexistence, and proud celebration. Looking back at the history of this festival, which is celebrated by the people in the summer, it dates back to the ancient Hunnu period.

The National Great Festival, which is widely celebrated throughout the country on July 11, 12, and 13 every year, originated from the time of the establishment of the united state of the Hunnu Empire, around the 1st-2nd century BC. Sources and writings from that time mention the festival, which not only testifies to this but also considers horse, wrestling, and archery as the origin of the original state. The Hunnu organized festivals to improve the unity of fragmented tribes and clans and the combat skills of soldiers, which has now taken the form of the three manly games of Mongolian ethnic groups. The Secret History of the Mongols also notes that the three manly games were celebrated in the "Huran month" or July.

In 1639, when Undur Gegeen Zanabazar was enthroned as the religious leader of the Khalkha, the "Danshig Naadam" was first organized. It is recorded that Bökh Lama won the wrestling and Bonkhor Donir's horse won at the original festival at Shireet Tsagaan Lake. After that, in 1772, a great festival was held to worship Khentii Mountain, and this festival was named "Arvan Zasag's Naadam" and became an annual state festival from 1912. However, this festival continued until the death of Bogd Khan, until 1925.

Along with the "Arvan Zasag's Naadam", the "People's State Naadam" began to be celebrated from 1922. After the establishment of the People's Republic of Mongolia, a decision was made to combine the two festivals, and at the Government meeting on May 15, 1925, it was decided that the festival would be on July 11, which is still in effect today. From 1946, it was renamed as the "Anniversary of the People's Revolution".

Thus, in 2003, the "National Great Festival" law was passed, declaring that "The National Great Festival is a national traditional great festival symbolizing the independence and sovereignty of Mongolia". Today, it is celebrated simultaneously at the national, provincial, and county levels with competitions in national wrestling, horse racing, and national archery. In 2010, the National Great Festival was registered in UNESCO's "Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity", officially proclaiming to the world the Mongolian festival that has been inherited for centuries.
