Apartment Prices in Ulaanbaatar Increase by 11% Compared to the Same Period Last Year

Published: Wed, 10 Jul 2024

The National Statistics Office reported that apartment prices in Ulaanbaatar remained unchanged in June compared to the previous month, but increased by 11% compared to the same period last year.

This increase was driven by the average price of old apartments, which rose by 13.6% year-on-year. Meanwhile, the average price per square meter for new apartments is four million tugriks, which is a 6.9% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Over the past two months, the price increase for new apartments has shown a relatively slower trend, while the average price of old apartments continues to rise.

In Ulaanbaatar, although the average price of new apartments in Khan-Uul district is the highest, Sukhbaatar district is still considered a valuable location. Of this, 2,082 households in Ulaanbaatar received loans amounting to 267.3 billion tugriks. Coal Export Volume Increases, but Average Border Price Drops by $34.2

Published: Mon, 08 Jul 2024

Foreign trade turnover reached $13.2 billion in the first 6 months of the year, increasing by 12.1% compared to the same period last year, according to the General Customs Administration. During the reporting period, the foreign trade balance exceeded $2.5 billion, showing a positive result.

Exports increased by 4.3% compared to the same period last year, while imports increased by 25.9%. Breaking it down, exports of textile materials and textile products increased by 12.4%. Within this, exports of combed cashmere increased by 58.8 tons, and exports of washed cashmere increased by 366.5 tons.

However, while the physical volume of coal exported to foreign markets has increased, the average border price has decreased by $34.2.

Economist N. Enkhbayar emphasized, "Although the physical volume of coal exports is increasing, the revenue is decreasing. We are focusing on the optimistic forecast of physical volume growth, but ultimately, the main factor that affects us is export revenue. Based on this, economic growth, budget revenue, and expenditure calculations based on export revenue are becoming too optimistic."

The increase in imported goods and products was mainly influenced by petroleum products, which increased by about 200,000 tons or $179.8 million. Also, the import of passenger cars increased to over 57,000, which is 1.8 times higher than the same period last year. However, imports of products such as eggs, rice, and powdered milk have decreased.

Total cargo transported in the first half of 2024 exceeded the full year figure of 2022

Published: Fri, 05 Jul 2024

The road transport sector transported 62.3 million tons of cargo in the first half of 2024, surpassing the total transportation figure for 2022, according to the Ministry of Road and Transport Development.

Preliminary estimates suggest that by the end of the year, about 120.5 million tons of cargo will be transported. This represents a 12.2 percent increase compared to the total transportation in 2023.

Road transport carried 41.4 million tons of cargo in the first six months of the year, with plans to reach 75 million tons by the end of the year. Railways transported 20.9 million tons of cargo in the first half of the year. If the target of 45.5 million tons is reached by the end of 2024, it will represent an increase of about 26 percent compared to 2023. The Ministry of Road and Transport Development also reported that air transport is expected to carry 2.2 million passengers.

By maintaining growth across all types of transport, the ministry estimates that the transport sector's revenue will reach 8.3 trillion tugriks by the end of the year.

Mongolia has established road transport agreements with 16 countries and can now operate direct flights to 157 destinations in 46 countries worldwide. The Ministry of Road and Transport Development also highlights that the increase in cargo turnover is due to road and railway construction and increased port capacity.

375 types of goods to be exported to Russian market duty-free

Published: Mon, 08 Jul 2024

The Ministry of Economy and Development is working to finalize a Temporary Free Trade Agreement this year that will enable duty-free export of 375 types of agricultural products to the Russian market. They are also working to conclude an Economic Partnership Agreement with South Korea in 2024 to increase trade, investment and economic cooperation. In addition, an official proposal has been submitted to China to start negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement, with plans to begin talks in 2024.

Free trade agreements cover not only tariff reductions, but also a wide range of issues including finance, investment, quarantine, relevant laws, product quality standards, new technologies, and digital transformation.

However, the legal environment for increasing exports and attracting investment remains limited and unclear. Trade and investment policies are inextricably linked, and by determining which export-oriented products to manufacture and implementing policies to attract investment accordingly, Free Trade Agreements can be effectively implemented.

For Mongolia, which relies on mining exports for foreign trade profits and is dominated by imports for consumer goods, there is a need to diversify exports, open up market access for non-mining products, and further attract investment to develop manufacturing.

SXCoal: Chinese End Users' Cost-Cutting Affects Mongolian Coking Coal Trade

Published: Mon, 08 Jul 2024

The trading activity of Mongolian coking coal at the Gantsmod port, China's largest land port, has weakened. This is related to the fact that most of the country's end users are operating in austerity mode, as highlighted by "SXCoal".

According to information from "SXCoal", the price of Mongolian Grade V coking coal has remained stable between 1300-1330 yuan per ton under long-term contracts.

As the "wait and see" interest dominates among buyers, the liquidity of trading at this port also remains unchanged. For instance, "Energy Resources", a subsidiary of "Mongolian Mining Corporation", recently signed a contract to sell 19,200 tons of washed coking coal at a price of 1190 yuan per ton. This is the second-lowest price since mid-June and only 10 yuan higher than the previous trade level, according to "SXCoal" calculations.

Looking at the situation more broadly, as the summer months typically mark a lull in China's steel market, market participants do not expect the coking coal market to recover in the near term, as emphasized in the report.

For instance, "Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi" JSC traded 10.5 million tons of coal, and "Energy Resources" LLC traded 2.9 million tons of coal. In addition, "Erdenet Mining Corporation" SOE started trading copper from April 29 this year. The plant plans to increase the amount of copper traded through the exchange from 2025, and by the end of 2026, it aims to trade 100% of its products through the exchange.

Under the blessing of the Blue Sky, in the bosom of Mother Earth, during the beautiful summer season of balanced sun and rain, we Mongolians have grandly and solemnly celebrated our great state ceremony, the National Great Festival Naadam.

Our people say, "The day after Naadam is autumn."

Therefore, remembering well that preparation is the foundation of success in any work, let us start preparing now for autumn work and winter readiness, and let us, the government and the people together, unite our efforts for the development and progress of our country.

Every Mongolian person, deeply aware of guarding the hearth of the Great Mongol Empire, should honor and follow the glory, deeds, and wisdom of Lord Chinggis Khaan, pass on the valuable traditions and cultural heritage to future generations, maintain unity, and contribute to the prosperity of our country.

The Mongolian Naadam is the great celebration of Father Sky, Mother Earth, and precious humans, the memory of the Mongolian state, a symbol of Mongolian unity and independence, and the spiritual and existential immunity of us Mongolians with our ancient history and power of harmony.

To the Naadam participants eagerly awaiting this priceless cultural heritage of humanity, this unique Mongolian Naadam, and to our esteemed guests visiting our beautiful country, I extend greetings on the historic 2233rd anniversary of the establishment of the First State, the 818th anniversary of the Great Mongol Empire, the 113th anniversary of the restoration of national freedom and independence, and the 103rd anniversary of the People's Revolution.

Dear esteemed citizens of our country,

Mongolia, with its proud history of statehood, history, and culture, and rich traditions, is the ancient cradle of humanity, the sacred hearth of nomadic powerful states, and a symbol of spiritual freedom and peace.

Therefore, to preserve, promote, and pass on to future generations the great history, culture, heritage, traditions, and customs of our ancestors, the President of Mongolia has issued decrees to respectfully enshrine the portrait of Chinggis Khaan, to rebuild the ancient capital Kharkhorin, and to honor, revere, and promote the Morin Khuur, the pride of Mongolia.

Also, to study our history and make it accessible to our people, we have begun the enormous task of creating the first-ever detailed explanatory dictionary of "The Secret History of the Mongols" and creating a comprehensive 20-volume book on the great history of the Mongolian nation that changed the world.

On this wonderful day of the National Great Festival, I am pleased to announce to our people that we have permanently and gloriously raised our golden Soyombo State Flag in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, which is an expression of the historical tradition, aspirations, unity, justice, and spirit of the Mongolian people.

Dear esteemed citizens,

We Mongolians are a proud people who, 100 years ago, adopted our first Constitution, established a Republican government, and guaranteed our universal right to elect and be elected.

This year, marking this historic anniversary, our people have further strengthened our democratic government, developed our parliamentary system, and for the first time elected the State Great Khural, the supreme governing body of the state, with 126 members.

On behalf of our people, I congratulate the members of the State Great Khural and the Government who have received the trust and broad support of the voters and have sworn an oath to the state and people to take the golden reins of the thousand-year-old Mongolian state at this time. I wish you great success in your important state work.

As representatives of the people, you must remain true to your oath, always honor the independence, national security, and unity of our country, demonstrate the highest ethical leadership, respect harmony, obey rules, be trustworthy, and work with dedication for the development and progress of our Mongolia.

May you respond to the trust and hope of the masses with genuine effort and uphold the honorable title of "State Pillar" bestowed upon you by our people.

My dear Mongolian citizens,

We Mongolians, guardians of the hearth of the Great Mongol Empire established by the great Chinggis Khaan, are now beginning our unique "Mongolian Naadam" in all its splendor and glory, raising our Nine-legged White Banner, the great shrine of statehood, to the eternal blue sky, praising the sun of the gentle world with our long songs, enlivening the golden earth with the melody of our horse-head fiddle, delighting our people and mountains and waters.

May the arena be filled with the might of our strong wrestlers, may the thundering of swift steeds shake our steppes, may the arrows of skilled archers whistle in the blue sky, and may my intelligent and gifted Mongolian people celebrate together in great abundance.

May Mongolia prosper under the power of the Eternal Blue Sky!"

Be Cautious of Injuries During the Holiday and Festival Days

Published: Tue, 09 Jul 2024

The number of accident and injury cases increases sharply during the summer season, especially during the days of the National Great Festival. As a result, the workload of the National Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics (NCTO) increases. Due to the extended holiday period during the festival days, the center provided information yesterday on preventing road traffic and domestic accidents and injuries.

For instance, last July, the Emergency Department of NCTO provided assistance and services to a total of 15,588 people. 41.8% of them were children aged 0-18 years. Particularly, injuries from falling off horses increase, with 204 children injured last year. Of these, 35 fell from racing horses. In the first six months of this year, 601 people received assistance and services for injuries from falling off horses, of which 269 were children.

Therefore, they advised to prevent road traffic accidents and potential dangers and risks. In particular, they warned to keep young children under supervision, to be cautious of burns and injuries when preparing khorkhog, boodog, and other types of food and drinks, and to be careful when traveling near rivers, lakes, and ponds. Most of the accidents and injuries during the festival days are caused by excessive consumption of alcohol and alcoholic beverages.
